Character: Ribbit
Canon: The Amazing Digital Circus | Post-Abstraction (specific point in the show is vague because Ribbit stops perceiving time, but I'm putting it at roughly the end of episode 7)
Age: 24 (chosen by player, not stated in canon or extracanon)

Background Information: ⚠️Contains spoilers for the series finale, as well as fantastical allegory for suicide ⚠️

Ribbit came to the Digital Circus sometime pre-series. It's not explicitly stated precisely how long in canon, but it would appear to be at least a few months if not more than a year. Not much is known about her prior to her arrival, aside from the fact that she is a former Mormon who left that religious community on bad terms, particularly with regard to her parents.

During her time at the Circus, Ribbit is shown to be broadly friendly with all the current members ---- Kinger, Ragatha, Kaufmo, and later Jax. She was particularly friendly with Kaufmo, having a tradition of going to the cafe with him each week. When Jax arrived, she was quick to welcome him into this tradition, as well as help him acclimate to Circus life in general, including him in hangouts with her and Kaufmo regularly and teaming up with Jax during partnered activities. Jax and Ribbit became fast, exceptionally close friends.

One night, after a day implied to be kind of unpleasant for Ribbit until Jax was able to "cheer her up," the two of them go to Ribbit's room and sit on her bed, relaxing. They talk for a while before Ribbit takes the conversation in a more personal direction, opening up to Jax about the fact that she left Mormonism and cut ties with her devoutly religious parents, but regrets not being able to make amends due to being stuck in the Circus. She asks Jax if he's ever had a similar experience, citing that her divulging the information was done as a sign of trust, and that she hopes he reciprocates.

Jax then tells Ribbit a very harrowing story about his own personal life prior to the Circus and his relationship with his mother and her gender-centric abuse. While Jax doesn't explicitly say as much, Ribbit is clued in by some of the things that he says and ostensibly by just having been close to him for a while that Jax is a closeted transgender woman. Taking off her bowtie that she normally wears, she places the bow on Jax's ear, and murmurs, "Your secret's safe with me."

The moment of silence shared between them after is explosive with unspoken emotional intimacy, trust, and acceptance (and strongly implied by the series creator that it was on the verge of turning romantic), but it is interrupted. Kaufmo knocks at the door, and Jax flies into a fit of panic, hurling the bow to the ground and hurriedly telling Ribbit that if she ever tells anyone about this, he will never speak to her again. He then flees. Ribbit tries to apologize the next morning, acknowledging that she may have pried too hard and that she's very sorry if she made him uncomfortable. Jax lies to her face, stating that the "corny backstory" was fake and meant to get a rise out of her, and proceeds to excuse himself. This is the beginning of the end.

From there, Jax begins to increasingly ice out Ribbit, ignoring her, avoiding her, and being curt with her when she tries to speak with him. This goes on for an undefined but clearly extensive amount of time, with Ribbit becoming gradually more despairing and desperate. Then, during an outing to Snowy Summit, Ribbit pulled Jax aside for a Hail Mary--- one last ditch attempt to try to talk with him meaningfully. This discussion did not go well, with Jax accusing Ribbit of holding his past over his head, manipulating him, using him, and downplaying their closeness. Finally, Ribbit gave up, apologizing one last time and saying that she would leave him alone.

The two didn't speak again. With limited space and opportunity for social interaction within the Circus and it's small group of members, Ribbit very quickly ran out of spaces where she was welcome due to Jax's presence, and began to isolate herself completely. Eventually, Jax is approached by Ragatha, who asks if he's "seen Ribbit at all today". We don't see the answer on screen, but one can safely assume that it's "no".

When Jax musters the courage to try and knock on Ribbit's door again, it's already too late.

Abstraction is a state of being unique to characters within the Digital Circus that occurs when they reach a breaking point of hopelessness and despair. The person recedes into their own mind, entering a dream state where they're left alone with their thoughts, effectively dead to the world, while their exterior form glitches out into a many-eyed amorphous blob that is hostile to anything that moves unless engulfed in darkness. It is tantamount to death, but is a choice that is at least partially deliberate on the part of the person abstracting. While we don't see what abstraction looks like internally for Ribbit, what we see of it for another character implies that there's a degree of internal structure to it involving separate "physical" spaces for different regrets, memories, personas, coping mechanisms, and dreams.

In her isolation, Ribbit had already abstracted by the time Jax finally came to speak with her again, denying him the opportunity. Ribbit does not appear through the rest of the story directly, but is frequently hinted at as a source of great personal regret and pain for Jax. We also learn that Jax has made the remaining members of the Circus promise to never, ever bring up Ribbit to him ever again, but this clearly has not helped, as she regularly appears in his dreams.

Though extracanon material has stated that abstraction is not reversible, this is never officially canonically confirmed as totally impossible, just that it has never been achieved. For the purposes of Escordvi, I'm writing her as having been pulled out of abstraction and made whole again---- but not without side effects on her mental state.

Because so much of Ribbit's backstory is unstated, I also have a few bits of headcanon that I use to fill in the blanks, such as a lifelong passion for music and dance, a failed career as a ballerina, a mixed-Korean heritage, and a youthful obsession with the Twilight books. I also have extensive notes on Ribbit's internal structure as an abstraction available upon request!

Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
Ribbit is, on first glance, chill to the absolute max. She's friendly, easygoing, casual, and easy to talk to. Quick to encourage or comfort others, well-meaning and optimistic, and agreeable and charismatic, Ribbit is quick to charm those around her with her genuinely good vibes and comes across as just an objectively pretty cool person. She becomes more excitable as someone gets to know her, having a penchant for chaos and hijinks, a love of mischief, and doesn't bother to stop herself from swearing even with the Circus-enforced real-time censor. Overall, she can be described as easy to get along with and relaxed. However, it's worth mentioning that her time as an abstraction has made her prone to episodes of dissociation, unreality, and even panic. While she does her best to conceal them, someone reasonably observant would be able to pick up on the fact that something seems to be quite wrong.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
Because life in the Digital Circus is so stagnant, Ribbit doesn't have a ton to be motivated about aside from just living day to day. Her wants are simple --- to be a good friend that other people can trust and rely on, to make it through what her circumstances throw at her, and to try and find ways to be happy in spite of everything. Post-abstraction, I think that this will largely remain the same. Ribbit will want to focus on making a good life for herself where she is, staying afloat, making friends, and hopefully patching things up with Jax, as well as being a good and dependable member of her armada and making her own fun.

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
Ribbit is someone who is flawed in ways that mostly are detrimental to herself and then to others by extension, rather than being harmful to other people directly. Her desire to be trusted and needed causes her to put burdens on herself that aren't really reasonable to her. She also puts people on the spot or pushes for closeness that may not yet be right for the other person. She has a tendency to shut down and not stand up for herself, allowing herself to be mistreated. She stifles her anger in favor of quiet self-blame.

Ribbit specifically cites cutting ties with her parents as something she regrets in canon, despite the fact that she was obviously uncomfortable with their devout Mormonism to go no-contact with them entirely. She also certainly regrets pushing the issue of convincing Jax to trust her with his past.

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
Aside from the fact that she's a cartoon frog? Probably her singing voice and ability to dance. She often walks around idly singing, particularly Y2K pop classics, but she knows plenty of sea shanties that will come in handy around here!

Abilities & Inventory: Ribbit doesn't really have any items aside from her little bowtie. Abilities, however, are worth mentioning, as they're not particularly overpowered but definitely pretty unique. Being a toon, Ribbit is extraordinarily durable and can take a hit like nobody's business. Cartoon physics allow her body to stretch and squash, even fully being flattened with seemingly no long-term ill effects. I am personally imposing upon her the Roger Rabbit Rule, meaning that she can only really do these things in situations where it would be funny, making her more susceptible to pain and injury when the tone of the situation doesn't lend itself to humor. She also has a long, sticky frog tongue with some impressive firepower, reaching approximately double the length of her actual body. This can't be used for just anything--- well, it can, but that doesn't mean it should, as whatever she grabs with it will end up reflexively going into her mouth or smacking her in the face. Will she use this ability inappropriately? Yes definitely. This will absolutely result in her being in situations. She also has, in clinical terms, mad jumps. Her frog legs are impressively powerful and allow her to jump both high and far with impressive force. Lastly, I wouldn't call this an ability so much as a thing that happens, but Circus members automatically have their swearing censored by a cartoon sound effect and a black bar that pops up over their mouth. It's very much visible and audible to other people and extremely stupid.

I would strongly prefer for Ribbit to be a Corsair, for a number of reasons. Chief among them is that Ilya plans to do the same for Jax, and while Ribbit could make either one work, Jax would make an extremely poor Paladin. But I also just think it would be more fun for her. As a lover of mischief, shenanigans, and foul language, Ribbit would very much like to do crime.
